From Hair To There

I have been wearing hair extensions on and off for almost 10 years.  I have them ‘installed’ professionally.  I started using the keratin bond type but found them to be a bit to rough, especially during removal, on my fine hair.  For the last 4 years, I have been wearing micro links. These are individual wefts applied in tiny strand bundles to tiny strand bundles of my own hair.  With all extensions, as your hair grows the bonds need to be removed, or repositioned, so they don’t pull and damage your natural hair.

I love the added volume and flexibility to change my length and style at whim.  I often say that hair extensions are better than botox for re-energizing your appearance. However, hair extensions do cause damage. There is plenty of breakage, more so if you color your hair.  Because I’ve been wearing them for so long, I do have some damage to my natural hair and have decided to take a (probably short) break from extensions. Extensions are almost addictive because you become accustomed to the added volume, it’s like a security blanket!

As I’m giving my hair a much needed rest, I’m consumed with trying to decide if I should just wear it up for the next month or so and see where I’m at. Or…do I get a fresh new cut and try to skip future extensions.  I work out and lead a busy life, extensions do not always fit my lifestyle.  They are tim mcgrawa lot of maintenance, take longer to dry and can be uncomfortable, so going without extensions will make my life a little easier.

As I’m trying to decide, I came across this fun app from InStyle magazine!  It’s their Hollywood Makeover Tool and you can try it here:  instyle.com/makeover

Here’s the ‘before’ photo I used from backstage at the Ellen show, because hey, any excuse to use a photo with Tim McGraw, right?!? LOL

A photo looking straight into the camera, with all your hair pulled back, is best.  I don’t have a photo like that, so my ‘after’ looks are limited because my hair isn’t pulled back, I couldn’t try out short hair styles without my hair showing.   I hope you’ll try it if you’re toying with the idea of changing your hair.  For me, ugh, it just makes me want more extensions!

Look 1 is Taylor Swift’s hair.  Look 2 is Reese Witherspoon’s hair.  Look 3 is Bella Thorne’s hair.

I used the ‘vintage’ filter before saving because it made the hair and skin blend better due to too much blue in my original photo.

I recommend trying it!  It’s fun! Just take a quick snapshot with your phone, making sure all your hair is pulled back for best results.  Send me your before and afters, I’ld love to see them!
