5 Basic Beauty Rules

Feeling gorgeous on the outside is only possible when you feel beautiful on the inside. The definition of beauty is different for each of us – it’s all about being true to yourself and doing what feels authentic to YOU. I love makeup, maybe you don’t, it’s all good! Whatever your thing is, do more of that!

There are 5 simple things that, done each day, can prepare your the canvas that is your body for putting your best face forward. Here we go:

1. Wash your face twice a day.
Sounds so basic! It’s easy to be so tired at night that you skip removing all the products, grime and sweat of the day off. No matter how tired you are, ALWAYS cleanse your face before bed. It’s called beauty sleep for a reason! While we sleep our skin breathes, repairs and regenerates. This can’t be done effectively if the skin is dirty and the pores clogged.

2. Use sunscreen everyday.
This is not new information, we need sunscreen. The suns rays damage our skin deep down into the dermis. This causes premature aging, sunspots, wrinkles and the dreaded c-word, cancer. I use 50 spf on my face and 15 sf or 30 spf on my body, depending on the season.

3. Don’t be a hot head.
Heat tools are super damaging to our hair. Tools like blowdryers, straighteners, curling irons, hot rollers, and more all damage hair. Split ends, breakage, dullness, loss of volume can all result from overuse of heat tools, even those touted as safe. Try styling your hair and making it last more than one day. This will cut down on the number of times you apply heat to your hair. To make your ‘do last another day, try a dry shampoo or beachy texture spray to refresh on the second day.

4. Dry brush and moisturize your skin.
Before every bath or shower, lightly brush your skin with a natural bristle dry brush. Pay special attention to crepey and wrinkle prone areas, such as elbows and knees. (See Dry Brushing blog post for more information.) After your bath/shower, moisturize while your skin is still damp for maximum benefit. Remember, if your moisturizer doesn’t contain and spf, apply a spray spf on top for protection from the sun.

5. Water, water and more water.
Drink your water! We’ve all heard we need to drink 8 – 8 ounce glasses of good quality water per day, but that formula is not a hard and fast rule. We all lose water all day, every day, but how much we need depends on things like our height, weight, activity level and climate. As a basic guideline, you should drink 1/2 ounce to 1 ounce of water for each pound you weigh. For example, if you weigh 160 lbs. and are very active, you would drink 160 ounces of water per day. If you live a sedentary life, you would need less, about 80 ounces per day.

The Mayo Clinic has great information regarding proper hydration, check it out here: http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/water/art-20044256

The Camelbak company has a very cool hydration calculator. I recommend plugging in your information before strenuous outdoor activity to make sure you bring along enough water. Here’s the link: http://www.camelbak.com/hydrationcalculatorwater
