Vitamin Sunshine

As spring turns to summer, it’s much easier to get outdoors and soak up some sun, with an SPF 45, of course!  Even if you’re stuck    inside for 40 hours a week, there are simple ways to get the benefits of Vitamin D that we get from sunshine.

We need vitamin D to help our bodies protect us from some really serious diseases, such as diabetes, cancer and a weak immune system.  Vitamin D works hand in hand with calcium to aid the absorption of calcium into our bodies and keeps our bones and teeth strong and helps to regulate blood pressure.

The daily recommended level of vitamin D is 600 IU (international units) per day for adults.  Even if you get to spend plenty of time outdoors, it’s often best to give the sun a little help by including vitamin D rich foods into your diet.  Vitamin D and calcium supplements are also a wonderful option, as is cod liver oil.

If you’re not a supplement or cod liver oil person and prefer to get your vitamin D from foods, here are some really great options:

Dairy – if you’re not vegan. Milk, yogurt or cheese fortified with vitamin D are easy for many people to incorporate.  You can even pair the milk with a vitamin D fortified cereal, just read the labels to avoid excess sugar and carbs.

Fish – salmon, swordfish, tuna, sardines are all good choices.  Not only do they    offer many preparation options, just 3 ounces of swordfish has 566 IUs of vitamin and 3 ounces of salmon provides 466 IUs, almost the entire recommended daily amount.
