Today I’m sharing some valuable insights on weight loss and feeling good. These findings are from, not only my own weight management experiences, but a compilation of my client’s most common weight loss journeys. They, as you may be, were surprised at how losing weight wasn’t really about the food, so let me debunk these three most common weight loss myths.
Myth: I have to eat only “clean, good for you foods” to lose weight.
You don’t have to completely overhaul your diet and only eat “perfect” foods. Instead, simply focus on eating the foods you love, but in smaller portions. Also, it’s important to pay attention to physical hunger cues.
This is actually a challenge for many people because we are so programmed to look at foods as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. My Gramma always told me that if you have a taste for something, it’s better to just enjoy a reasonable serving and happily move on. Gramma Frieda was right! For many people, denying a treat can lead to obsessing over it or a feeling of lack or suffering. In the end, you many end up eating it anyway, but it’ll be in a larger quantity and come with feelings of guilt, despair and self-loathing.
Myth: I have to exercise like a maniac, and anything less is not enough.
When you’re ready to make a lifestyle change, many people attempt to change everything at once. This strategy can set you up to fail. Take for instance, beginning a diet and starting to exercise, especially when you don’t exercise regularly now. This is too much change at one time for most people and many will just give up on all of it.
To give yourself the best chance for success, concentrate on one thing at a time. If you’re interested in losing weight and firming up or building muscle:
- Concentrate on altering your diet first. 90% of weight loss is about food intake. Only 10% exercise.
- Find a meal plan that you LOVE! This is very important! Enjoying the process ensures success.
- Once you are in a rhythm where you’re comfortable with your new nutrition choices, schedule, etc. it’s time to begin adding in an exercise routine.
Myth: I have to punish myself if I mess up because anything less than perfect isn’t good enough.
I cannot overstate the importance of shifting from self-judgment and criticism to self-acceptance and self-love.
Treating yourself with kindness and grace is more effective in creating sustainable results than being hard on yourself. Weight loss, or any other lifestyle change, can be achieved through a mindset shift, self-acceptance, and making small, sustainable changes to your eating and exercise habits. It’s about finding a balance that works for you and approaching weight loss from a place of love and self-care.
So many women contact me thinking that, with a diet and workout plan in hand, all I have to do it wave a magic hypnosis wand over them and all their problems will disappear. I really wish I, or anyone, had that power! Actually, in a way we all do, it’s the power of your own creative imagination and thought habits.
Everything we see in our material world is the product of what we believe we deserve. I know that may sound a bit woo-woo, but it’s true. The secret to manifesting, changing your weight, life, bank account, relationships, anything all comes down to your thinking. You see, we can only manifest what we think we deserve to have, be or do. It’s really that simple. Not easy, but simple.
